There’s one common issue with fantasy baseball player rankings – they don’t translate to custom league settings. Most sets of player rankings are built toward a traditional roto 5×5 setting and most people play in leagues with custom settings, which is why I created fScore rankings based on core fantasy skills.
There are four main skills that go into an effective fantasy baseball pitcher.
- Durability (fPDurability)
- Stuff (fStuff)
- Control (fControl)
- Run Prevention (fERA)
NOTE: Run Prevention is designated by fERA and has within it a subcategory weighing external factors, such as defense behind the pitcher and home ballpark.
Please read the article about how to read the specific fScores before going through the below starting pitcher rankings. Remember also, pitching is much more volatile, especially to injury than hitters and have about a 20% higher likelihood of long term injury.
Ranking Notes:
TIER 1
Burnes, Scherzer, Buehler, Cole, deGrom, Woodruff and Bieber:
Scherzer technically has the higher ranking than Burnes, but with Burnes’ potential if he were to hit 180 – 200 innings, he could be the best pitcher in baseball.
Cole is the almost unanimous number one and he has great stuff, but since he’s been on the Yankees he tends to give up a good amount of runs.
deGrom is obviously the best pitcher in baseball, but he needs to play if he’s going to be valuable. The same goes for Bieber, who should rank higher as long as he plays a full year.
Woodruff is just overall heavily above average.
TIER 2
Wheeler, Fried and Urias:
Wheeler is basically a lesser, older version of Woodruff. Then Fried and Urias are lesser, younger versions of Woodruff.
TIER 3
Nola, Sale, Alcantara, Gausman, Peralta, Giolito, Verlander and Kershaw:
Kershaw for some reason keeps getting forgotten, even though he’s clearly a Hall of Famer and amazing every time he pitches, but his ranking all depends on his health and will to continue pitching now and into the future.
Sale is still great and now that he has a regular off season, I’m banking on the fact he can maintain his top 15 SP status.
Nola is better than the numbers he put up, while Alcantara and Gausman might be the opposite and we will see next year. I tend to trust Alcantara more because he has great stuff and hasn’t really picked the perfect pitch mix yet, while Gausman was pitching in a great pictures park and moving to the AL East where he previously bombed, so it’s a bit scary.
Peralta is better than Giolito in regards to fStuff and fERA, but Giolito has better durability and control. I’ll take the stuff most of the time. Verlander obviously has tier 1 stuff when you see his numbers, but he’s coming off Tommy John and we have to see if he has it before we buy hard.
TIER 4
Flaherty, Manoah, McClanahan, Darvish, Berrios, Ray, Morton, Wainwright and Lynn:
Flaherty is showing much less overall, most likely due to his injury last year. I’m really big on Manoah and McClanahan and own them in any league I can.
Someone looking at this tier might ask why Robbie Ray is so low, but just look at his fScores! He has a great fStuff – which anyone who know Robbie Ray knows, but his fControl and fERA are garbage because of his last couple of years before 2021.
Morton, Waino and Lynn would likely rank higher up if it wasn’t for age, but age usually keeps guys like this down. I would buy them in redraft though.
TIER 5
Musgrove, McCullers, Rogers, Webb, Castillo, Severino, Lopez, Snell, Montas, Clevinger, Gray, Strasburg and Means:
Musgrove is pretty underrated and at the beginning of the year was showing top 20 SP stuff. McCullers and Rogers are more or less equals as far as fScores, but with both it’s more about being healthy.
Severino has much better fStuff than the rest of the guys in the tier, but he needs to build back up to a starter’s workload, which might take until 2023.
Pablos Lopez and Snell might be a bit underrated in this tier. Lopez is really good when he plays and Snell was stellar in the 2nd half.
Clevinger could be better in San Diego, but we won’t know until about May. Strasburg is easily up in the Severino level when he’s healthy — will he start the season in the rotation though?
One thing when looking at Means is his fERA is atrocious and it’s possible this gets much better if he gets traded out of Baltimore.
TIER 6
Gilbert, Baz, Ohtani, Bauer, Eovaldi, Rodon, Gallen, Anderson, Ryu, Manea, Mahle, Stroman, Ryan, Bassitt, Cease, Syndergaard, McKenzie, Houck, Ashby, Sanchez, Urquidy, Suarez, Plesac, Marquez and Hendricks:
I think Logan Gilbert is a future ace. Baz looks great, but we need to see more of him.
This tier is like a #4 SP tier in most cases, who could break out into a larger role. Joe Ryan, Houck and Ashby are all high potential guys in this tier that I might have higher than others, but they have great fStuff and fERA.
TIER 7
Garcia, Sandoval, Skubal, Rodriguez, Ynoa, Kopech, Wood, Patino, Ober, DeSclafani, Paddack, Carrasco, Valdez, Greinke, Rasmussen, Gray, Gonzales, Quantrill and Montgomery:
This is the potential tier that has pitchers missing one skill, but if they figure it out they have the potential to move up into the ace or near ace tiers.
Skubal, Kopech, Sandoval and Patino in particular catch my interest.
TIER 8
Contreras, Gonsolin, Pearson, Gray, Heaney, Sanmartin, Hudson, Matz, Mikolas, Hernandez, Taillon, Lamet, Kluber, Kaprelian, Hill, Singer, Alzolay and Eflin:
Roansy Contreras and Pearson have the most interesting skills in the tier, while the rest of the guys are lower tier starters who provide depth without destroying your ratio stats.
TIER 9
Luzardo – Miley:
This tier is all depth starters and top prospects, so depending on your need, some stable late round stats or some young prospects that won’t be around until mid-season – you can find something that will help the fantasy team this year.
Guys like Max Meyer, Grayson Rodriguez, Greene, Brash, Liberatore and Dustin May all have potential to be effective, but only if they are playing in the majors.
TIER 10
Cabrera – Gomber:
This tier is full of prospects and injured guys who should be back later in the year.
TIER 11
Quintana – Sheffield:
To be honest, these guys aren’t even streamers in most leagues, but they are in deeper leagues and can be used as depth pieces when injuries happen in 15 team leagues.
