The third week may have featured fewer headline injuries, but that doesn’t mean pitchers got off easy. Much like we saw last year, the big inning has seemingly become harder to avoid for pitchers. After 3-4 starts for most who are still on their feet we see many starters who had a blow up in there. Those who have managed to avoid will inevitably get their turn, but you hope they have baked a nice cake to that point that a sour ingredient can be absorbed. I mention this because everytime I see a negative number for one of my teams in the daily standings I ask myself, “Is it because of no pitching or bad pitching?” You have to ask yourself early on when metrics have wide error bars, “Do I really want to take a shot on this guy against that team in that park?” Past is not prologue, but the biggest mistakes you can make this time of year is getting caught with the wrong pitcher on the mound and he goes out and gives up 7 runs in less than three innings.

Week 3 —–> 1
The top of the standings features many names you would probably expect, and also, the Pittsburgh Pirates. That isn’t some kind of mistake as the Bucs have played pretty well so far boasting a top-10 batter in the game, while the pitching has been attempting to inject some of the ol’ youthful vigor when the piss runs out on the old warhorses they stocked in front of the colts. Division-mates Cincinnati and Milwaukee are also top-third teams so they will need to continue to play at a high level all year if they hope to get back to the playoffs. Let’s take a quick look at how their players have performed thus far before moving on to the rest of the league:
