There’s one common issue with fantasy baseball player rankings – they don’t translate to custom league settings. Most sets of player rankings are built toward a traditional roto 5×5 setting and most people play in leagues with custom settings, which is why I created fScore rankings based on core fantasy skills.
NOTE: I recommend reading the hitting fScores article on FWFB before proceeding below.
There are five main skills that go into an effective fantasy baseball hitter.
- Contact ability (fContact)
- Plate Discipline (fDiscipline)
- Power (fPower)
- Speed (fSpeed)
- Durability (fDurability)
Please read the article about how to read the specific fScores before going through the below shortstop rankings.
Ranking Notes:
TIER 1
Tatis and Turner:
Like 2B, SS is really strong and the two guys I have in the first tier are both going into 2022 with multi position eligibility. Tatis and Turner are actually closer than they look for me. Tatis has the shoulder issue, which scares me, but his power speed combo is superior to Turner, even though Turner has better plate and contact skills.
TIER 2
Bichette, Semien and Story:
This tier might have some changes to it depending on where Story ends up, but Bichette is #3 over Semien, even though Semien has better fScores, because I think Bichette has yet to reach his peak and I doubt Semien tops his 2021 season, especially now being on a worse team in possibly a worse ballpark for hitters.
Funny enough, I’m probably low on Bichette right now – I don’t think he’s a first rounder like some people drafting, but second rounder for sure.
TIER 3
Boegaerts, Seager, Lindor, Baez, Franco, Polanco, Correa and Witt:
Tier 3 is huge and it’s also full of skill. This is a tier of guys I project to be all star caliber players and goes nine players deep. Boegaerts is over Seager only because of Seager’s durability issues.
I like Lindor more than Baez, even though Lindor is coming off a bad year last year, I think he adapts and can be a 25/20 player again.
I have Baez ahead of Wander, even though Wander is probably already the better real life player, simply because I don’t know how many steals we can expect Wander to pitch in and I think he’s only a 20 homer guy right now.
My favorite player in this tier and the biggest wild card is Witt. Since we don’t know when he will come up and there are no major league stats to judge him by, he’s scoring super high and maybe he’s that good, but we won’t know until he gets some MLB time.
TIER 4
Taylor, Chisholm, Swanson, Anderson, Adames, Mondesi and Saurez:
I’m lower on Tim Anderson than most and he shows up at 17 in my SS rankings, primarily because he has bad fDiscipline.
Adalberto scores incredibly well because of his fSpeed, even with an fDurability of only .58, which shows how much this super speedsters can have an impact on the fScore total, which isn’t supposed to lean heavily toward roto style, so this is why is his much lower in the rankings than the pure fScore and also just the unpredictability surrounding him.
TIER 5
Segura, Kim, Cruz, Gregorious, Gimenez and Kiner-Falefa:
There are a couple average producers in this tier who are nice injury fill-ins in 12 team leagues, or solid MI guys in 15 team leagues like Segura, Didi and IKF, plus I have a couple shot in the dark types who could produce nice numbers or could fail completely like Oneil Cruz, Kim and Andres Gimenez. These guys all have high potential, but haven’t shown it at the Major League level yet.
TIER 6
Rodgers, Barrero, Stott, Lewis, Downs, Urshela, Rojas, Rosario, DeJong, Garcia, Gordon, Lopez, Perdomo, Abrams, Miller, Newman and Andrus:
This is the rookie call up watch / waiver fodder tier. Some of these guys like Stott and Abrams you might have to draft at the end of a standard draft if you want to hold them before a call up. Outside of the prospects there is nothing much to say about the other guys here, they are basically just injury fill-ins in most leagues.
TIER 7
Castro, Harrison, Sosa, Crawford, Rengifo, Galvis, Hoerner, Diaz and Groshans:
This tier can basically be ignored in all but the deepest leagues. Some people really like Sosa, but I’m a Cardinals fan and still wouldn’t recommend him unless you are in a 20+ team league.
